If you are looking for a new refrigerator it can be difficult to know where to start. There are so many possibilities and options to consider that it can be a little overwhelming unless you have a clear idea of exactly what you need. To find the right refrigerator for your situation there are several key considerations that you should think about to guide you to the right decision. Your budget will obviously be important but you will need to balance that with your practical needs regarding food storage and available space.

How much storage space to you need?

Table top refrigerators are usually cheaper than larger free standing models but they offer only very limited storage. If you have a family you are probably going to need something bigger to accommodate your weekly shopping. A floor standing model will take up more space in your kitchen but it will allow you to safely store all of your food with room to spare.

How big is your kitchen?

Are you buying a refrigerator as a part of a kitchen refit? A built-in refrigerator can offer a stylish addition to your kitchen, but beware the limitations. It may match your shiny new kitchen units but built-in refrigerators are often smaller than free standing models. They often have shelves that are too narrow to accommodate the wider boxes that you may need to store in a chilled environment.

Do you need a freezer compartment?

Most refrigerators offer a freezer compartment at either the top or bottom of the refrigerator. These are rarely large enough to act as the main freezer for your family but they can provide a useful location to store items that you need to access quickly. If the freezer compartment is important to you think about whether you need it at the top or bottom of the fridge. This can be a particularly important issue if you have mobility issues, or don't like bending. If the freezer is at the top of the refrigerator then you will obviously need to bend lower to reach the main refrigerator.

What is going inside the refrigerator?

Is storage flexibility important to you? If it is you will want to look for models that have adjustable shelves that can be moved up and down, or even removed entirely to enable storage of especially large items. If you like organising your fridge then think about choosing a model that has full-extension drawers to allow easy access of items at the rear of the refrigerator. You might also consider a model that offers drawers with separate humidity or temperature controls for sensitive products.

By considering your storage needs before your start looking for a fridge, you can quickly narrow your search to the most appropriate model for your situation.
